Nico’s Lunchbox Learning Activity - Lesson 1: Scavenger Hunt

Look through all the pages in Nico’s Lunchbox and write down the items you see in the illustrations. For example, on page 2, there is a lunchbox. On page 3, there’s a shell. After you finish writing your list, walk around your house to see if you can find the same items you see in the book laying around your house. If you have a brother or sister at home, have them follow the same directions and see who can find more items.

Nico’s Lunchbox Learning Activity - Lesson 4: Encourage Nico

Nico’s mom wrote notes to her son that explained more about HAE. Her notes rhymed. For example, she wrote:

HAE is a disease that’s very rare.
I’ll try to explain, let me share.

The words rare and share have the same ending sound - they rhyme. Find a piece of paper and write two sentences that will encourage Nico when he doesn't feel well. Make the last words in the sentences rhyme. See the example below.

Nico, you are very strong.
I support you all day long.

Feelings

Nico's Lunchbox Learning Activity - Lesson 5: Examine Feelings

In the story, Nico sometimes felt upset. For example, on page 13, he was overwhelmed by all the questions his friends asked him about HAE. Other times, events in the story made him feel happy. For example, on page 23, he was excited to go on the Brady Club website with his mom. Click here to open up another chart in a separate window. Print it out, or copy it to your own sheet of paper. Write down things that make you feel upset, and things that make you feel happy. Share your list with a family member.
